Genevieve Carr

My drawing is an extension of my photography which is the main element in my art practice. My contour drawings are a way of recording my personal journeys. I draw my environment as I see it by re-tracing the visible and the present moment but also working from photographs as a way of documenting my sense of place through my connection to objects. Both my photography and drawing practice explore my fascination regarding the nature of humans which allows an audience to ‘see’, or at least to imagine, what is otherwise invisible; individuals don’t often ‘see’ little gestures that people make or the importance of an object that someone else holds dear. I am choosing to make these often invisible things visible.

Douglas Kean

The artist I have selected to participate in the exhibition is Douglas Kean. Douglas is a current SCA student in 3rd year Painting. Much of his practice incorporates the use of drawing in a dramatic and painstakingly detailed way. He fits nicely into the theme of the exhibition as his approach to drawing is a devoted and serious one; much of his larger works have their origins in his lyrical and spontaneous sketches.

Christopher John

Christopher John is a second year sculpture student at SCA. He is relevant to this exhibition as he does a lot of preliminary drawings for sculptures. Often he uses his drawings alongside his sculpture work when it is presented or installed. He also uses drawing by itself like many other artists. It will be interesting to see how he decides to work in this exhibition.

Jessica Minervini-Eringa

Jessica is a 3rd Year Printmedia student currently studying at Sydney College of the Arts. She is in love with screen-printing and takes particular pleasure in clean line and simple two colour prints, at the moment duck egg blue and muted mint green. Her inspiration comes from her travels, other artists, adventures with dorin and ban, posters, books, quotes, music and raiding her grandmothers photo albums and attic. If you cant find her screen-printing she can probably be found reading a book or having a picnic, sometimes doing both simultaneously.

Individual Artist Statement - Simon Ready

I am a contemporary art student whose practices mainly within a print media genre. When I am producing works I feel that there is always an under lying essence of pop art or pop culture with in my works. I love the idea of pop art and popular culture, large bold works with a current subject matter. I also enjoy the processes and techniques that famous pop artists have adopted, even if computer technology has out dated them.
Use of computer based drawing programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator are techniques that I use widely with in my practice. Using these programs gives you an endless amount of options when it comes to expressing yourself visually. I use these tools to develop my ideas when in the planning process. I see them as a modern day form of drawing pad and pencil. I aim to express these variations of my work with in this exhibition and adapt them so they fit in with the space.

Individual Artist Statement: Rebecca Park

In my art practice I use a variety of different mediums and styles including drawing, collage, silk screen, sewing and stenciling. Using a blend of these materials and techniques my work is layered and filled with masses of information that encourages the audience to look closer and become involved. Often my work reflects my moods and tends to be a coordinated jumble of interesting images both collect and created by myself. The Shades of Grey exhibition allows me to take a more solemn approach to my work, focusing more on drawing and getting back to basics. This is a welcome experience to refine my drawing skills and create less busy artworks that will hopefully still encourage a closer look.

Individual Artist Statement - Nina Gibbes

In this exhibition I hope to have the chance to further incorporate the practice of drawing into my work. Drawing as an exercise is a fundamental tool to the artist and vital for the development of work. In some respects, my work is interested in unconventional approaches to artmaking and drawing out work that is rather spontaneous. I see drawing as an artform that can be transformed into a fine practice and a medium that is very successful in channeling spontaneity. I use printmaking and occasionally projection art as a vehicle for creating my work but would like to expand my horizons by getting back to basics with an art that is so widely recognised, respected and available.

Individual Artist Statement - Isabella Smith

I am a contemporary artist who works with a variety of mediums within printmaking. I choose to make art as an expression of my ideas and also to channel my energies. My work normally begins with freehand drawings or what I refer to as blue prints, which I sometimes translate to other mediums. Inside of printmaking I like to produce my work through screen printing, etching and different methods of drawing. My practice also makes extensive use of digital photography and occasionally sculpture.
I like to work with drawing primarily because it’s a simple technology that is raw and direct from the body to the paper. I find it best at conveying my initial concepts and meaning. I look forward to the challenge of bringing my practice into this drawing exhibition and also seeing what other artists will develop within the unusual space.
